Awareness of Women’s Hair Loss

How many times have you been watching television and seen a commercial promoting some product that is supposed to reverse baldness in men? Did you ever see that one in which the “solution” was to actually spray a cover-up to make the hair look thicker? Men’s hair loss is the major advertising thrust on TV and other media. The point and issue is that very many women suffer from hair loss, as well. Women lose their hair in startling numbers – just as many women as men, and for even more reasons than men. We’ll cover just some of the primary reasons for women’s hair loss.

There are not many, if any, media programming on the subject of female hair loss problems. What is known about this is there could be a variety of reasons for thinning hair in women. So what we’ll do is talk more about this condition seen in women.

For men, you know there is male pattern hair loss. Female pattern hair loss is the equivalent condition that occurs in women. It is close to androgenic alopecia but is not quite the same thing. The hair loss pattern is different for women. What usually happens in men is that the hair loss occurs in certain locations, and then it spreads out from there. Women begin to thin at the crown, and all over the top, and it gets thinner.

One leading cause of female baldness and hair thinning is alopecia areata. Surprisingly, it’s a disorder of the the autoimmune system. A person has no way of finding out by your own efforts, alone. Your family doctor is the only person to make that kind of diagnosis. If you notice that your hair is getting thin or that you are starting to lose it, contact your doctor. The good news is that you can treat this disorder. It can be treated because it is an autoimmune problem. So your doctor can help you determine the best approach to your treatment.

Women’s hair loss is also largely due to her genetic background. The best way to find out about it is to study the people in your family, and then visit your doctor for an assessment. This is a tough situation for some women because it is genetic, and nothing can be done to treat it. That’s why there’s so much frustration, plus the level of shame is very high in these conditions. For these women the only alternative is to explore ways to conceal the hair loss, or get transplants.

Women’s hair loss doesn’t get nearly as much documentation as the hair loss that men suffer through. What is well-known is that women have hair loss issues in many different contexts.

There’s an inability to control those situations in most cases. What is known is that genes, or genetics, can play a role as can body chemistry. Some types of hair loss are temporary, and others are permanent and require some disguising. As with many conditions, you will not be able to properly diagnose your hair loss or thinning condition, so do see your family doctor.
